The Famous Grouse Smoky Black 1L
You know that gentle wisp of smoke off the nyama choma grill? Bottle it, soften it, wrap it in dried fruit and spice, and you've basically got Smoky Black. It's regular Famous Grouse with the lights dimmed and a campfire lit in the corner. Easy enough to pour neat after a long day, characterful enough to keep a whisky nerd talking. Smoky, not scary. The full litre means you won't be rationing it.
First sniff is warm and musky, soft smoke drifting up rather than punching you. Then the sip lands fuller than you'd expect for a blend: dried fruit, a little toasted malt, a curl of spice, and that gentle peat smoke threaded all the way through. It finishes long, smoky and aromatic, the kind of warmth that hangs around for the next chat. Approachable peat, basically. If proper Islay monsters scare you off, this is the friendly way in.
The details
Pairs well with
Where it's from
This is Scotland's doing, blended by Edrington, the crew behind the Famous Grouse name. Smoky Black is the grown-up reboot of the old Black Grouse, relaunched in 2015 with more peat in the recipe. Part of that smoke comes from a peated version of Glenturret, which happens to be one of the oldest working distilleries in Scotland. So there's real heritage hiding behind the easy price.

Scotland. It's blended by Edrington and is the successor to the old Black Grouse, with peated malts including a peated Glenturret giving it that smoke.
