Tons de Duorum Red 75cl
Pour this and you get a glassful of ripe red and dark berries with a little woodsmoke curling underneath. It's dry but generous, soft on the tannins, with just enough freshness to keep you going back for the next sip. The kind of bottle you open on a Friday when there's grilled meat on the fire and no reason to rush. Want it tonight? Say the word and we'll get it to your door.
Nose first: strawberry and raspberry, then darker blackberry and a hint of prune, with a spicy, almost peppery note from its time in oak barrels. On the palate it's medium-bodied and smooth, the fruit ripe and round, the tannins soft enough that nothing grips too hard. Acidity keeps it lively, and the finish hangs around longer than you'd expect at this price. Easy to love, nothing to puzzle over.
The details
Pairs well with
Where it's from
This comes from the Douro Valley in northern Portugal, the same steep, terraced river country that gave the world Port. It's made by Duorum, a winery whose name is Latin for "of two," because it started as a team-up between two of Portugal's most respected winemakers, João Portugal Ramos and José Maria Soares Franco, the latter famous for decades behind the legendary Barca Velha. The grapes are all native Douro: Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional and Tinta Roriz, the same trio behind some seriously pricey bottles.
