Pour this cold and the whole glass smells like a fruit market in summer. Lemon, white flowers, a bit of ripe peach. The first sip is bright and dry, with that little flinty, mineral kick down the Douro hills are famous for. It's the white you want when the evening is warm and the food is salty. Grilled fish, a plate of nyama choma, friends still arriving. Easy to like, but there's real character underneath.
On the nose it's all citrus and white blossom, with a touch of stone fruit, think peach and a whisper of apricot. Taste it and it's properly dry, no sugar, just zippy lemon-and-lime freshness backed by a cool, almost stony minerality from the schist soils. The acidity keeps everything tight and clean, so it leaves your mouth refreshed and wanting the next sip. Light to medium in body, nothing heavy, the kind of white that wakes up your palate.
The details
Pairs well with
Where it's from
This comes from the Douro in northern Portugal, the dramatic terraced valley better known for Port. Duorum was started in 2007 by two of Portugal's most respected winemakers, Joao Portugal Ramos and Jose Soares Franco, who spent decades at the top of the trade before teaming up. The name is Latin for "of two," a nod to the partnership. The fruit comes off old indigenous-grape vines planted on the region's stony schist soils, which is where that mineral edge in the glass comes from.
