You want a red that just gets on with it. Pour this and you get a glass full of ripe cherry and plum, a velvety hit of spice, and tannins so soft they barely make you blink. It's a Rioja that leans into the fruit instead of burying it under old-school oak, which makes it dangerously easy to keep topping up. Grab it for a nyama choma night, a slow Sunday roast, or just a Tuesday that needs improving. We'll have it at your door fast, whatever the hour.
Tasting note · by The Oaks Cellar

First sniff is all ripe red fruit. Think raspberry and cherry, a little plum, then a warm waft of vanilla and toasted bread from the oak underneath. A whiff of spice too, like cracked pepper and a hint of tobacco. On the palate it's warm and velvety, the fruit stays juicy, and the tannins (the grippy bit that dries your gums) are fine and smooth rather than chewy. Dry, but never harsh. It finishes clean and leaves you reaching for the next sip.

Where it's from

This comes from Familia Torres, a Spanish wine family with roots going back to the 1500s and serious winemaking since 1870. In 2005 they set up shop in Labastida, in the high-altitude heart of Rioja Alavesa, on calcareous clay and limestone soil that Tempranillo loves. The vineyards climb impressively high, and the name Altos (Spanish for 'heights') nods to exactly that. It's made 100% from Tempranillo and aged 12 months in French and American oak, the modern, fruit-first take on classic Rioja.
