-19%Pour this when you want a whiskey that doesn't pick a fight. Tullamore D.E.W. is soft, golden and friendly, all honey and vanilla with a little spice that keeps it interesting. It's the bottle you hand someone who says they don't like whiskey, then watch them go back for a second. Neat by the fire or stretched long with ginger ale, it just works.
First sniff is sweet and easy: honey, toffee, a bit of vanilla and a flick of citrus peel, with a soft biscuity warmth underneath. On the tongue it's full but gentle, more honey and vanilla joined by orchard fruit, a touch of sherry-soaked spice and a pepper tingle that fades clean. Nothing sharp, nothing smoky. Just smooth, rounded and very, very drinkable.
The details
Pairs well with
Where it's from
This comes from the town of Tullamore in County Offaly, right in the Irish midlands. The D.E.W. isn't marketing flair, it's Daniel E. Williams, the man who ran the original distillery in the 1800s and stamped his own initials on the bottle. Today it's made by William Grant & Sons, who built a brand-new distillery back in Tullamore in 2014, bringing the whiskey home to where the name started.
