You know those nights when you want red wine but not a big tannic mouthful that needs a steak to make sense? This is that bottle. Pop it in the fridge, pour it chilled, and you get a soft, juicy hit of ripe red berries with a gentle sweet finish. It's the wine for people who think they don't like wine, and the one that quietly wins over the people who do. Spicy takeaway, a square of dark chocolate, a slow Friday on the couch. Sorted.
Tasting note · by The Oaks Cellar

Think a big bowl of ripe strawberries and red cherries, with a little jammy sweetness underneath. The smell pulls you straight into red fruit, and the first sip is plush and soft, no grip on your tongue and nothing that dries your mouth out. The sweetness is real but not sticky, balanced by just enough freshness to keep it lively. It glides down easy and finishes clean. Low on the booze too at 12 percent, so it's a gentle one.

Where it's from

Nabygelegen is a small private cellar tucked into the Bovlei valley above Wellington, in South Africa's Western Cape, ringed by mountains that keep the vines happy. The name is old Cape Dutch for "lying nearby," a nod to the original owners who farmed land just down the road. The estate itself goes way back, with roots in a 1712 land grant and a historic old cellar full of stone foot-presses and underground tanks. The Upper Valley range is their easygoing, everyday line, and this sweet red is the most laid-back of the lot.

What does Nabygelegen Upper Valley Sweet Red 750ml taste like?

Soft and juicy, full of ripe strawberry and red-cherry fruit with a gentle, balanced sweetness. Very little tannin, so nothing dries out your mouth. It's an easy, fruity sip rather than a serious heavy red.

What is the ABV of Nabygelegen Upper Valley Sweet Red?

It's 12 percent alcohol, so on the lighter side for a red. Nice for a relaxed evening when you don't want anything too strong.

How do I serve it?

Chilled. Give it about 30 minutes in the fridge so it lands around 10 to 12 degrees, then pour into any wine glass. It's also lovely over ice on a hot day.

What food pairs with Nabygelegen Sweet Red?

It loves spicy food, the sweetness tames the heat, so curries and tikka are spot on. It also works with nyama choma, dark chocolate and fruity desserts.

Where is it from?

From Nabygelegen Private Cellar in the Bovlei valley near Wellington, in South Africa's Western Cape.

Is it a sweet wine or a dry one?

This is the sweet version. Nabygelegen also makes an Upper Valley Dry Red if you want something with no sweetness, but this bottle is firmly on the sweet, fruity side.
