Urban Bites comes from Norda Industries, a Nairobi snack company started back in 2008 by Tajdin and Khatun Jaffer and their grandson Faraz Ramji. The genuinely cool bit is the potato. Faraz reportedly cracked the supply problem by literally Googling 'potato supply Kenya,' which led him to a group of farmers up in Bomet trained to grow the right kind of spud for crisps (high dry matter, low sugar, so no nasty brown rings). Norda contracted them directly, paid them well above the middleman rate, and built the whole brand on properly local potatoes. In 2022 KPMG and Business Daily ranked Norda the top SME in Kenya's Top 100. Not bad for a bag of crisps.
