Veuve Ambal Rose Brut 75cl
★★★★★ 5.0 (1 review)Picture pale-pink bubbles fizzing up the glass and a nose full of fresh raspberries. That's this bottle. It's a French sparkling rosé made the exact same way as Champagne, just from Burgundy instead, so you get the same fine, dancing fizz for a far friendlier price. Brut means it's dry, not sweet, which makes it dangerously easy to keep pouring. Birthday, payday, a quiet Tuesday that needed rescuing. Say the word and we'll have it at your door, chilled and ready.
It leads with red fruit. Ripe raspberry and strawberry on the nose, a little redcurrant, a whiff of that sweet grenadine-syrup thing. Take a sip and the bubbles are fine and persistent, not aggressive, carrying all that berry across your tongue before it dries out clean on the finish with a faint toasty note from its time resting in the cellar. It's fruity and gourmand without ever tipping into sweet. Properly moreish.
The details
Pairs well with
Where it's from
Veuve Ambal is a family house in Burgundy that's been making sparkling wine since 1898, and Crémant de Bourgogne is basically Burgundy's answer to Champagne. Same grapes you'd find up north (Pinot Noir and Chardonnay), same traditional method where the wine takes its second fizz inside the bottle, and the same patient cellar ageing of a year or more. For this rosé the fruit is hand-harvested and gently pressed to keep that delicate pink colour. Champagne pedigree, without the Champagne swagger.
