Some bottles you save for a reason, and this is one of them. Woodford Reserve is the kind of bourbon you pour slow, after a long day, when you want something that actually rewards paying attention. It's rich, chewy and ridiculously smooth, with this warm cocoa-and-caramel hug on the way down. Sip it neat tonight and you'll get why people don't shut up about it.
Bring the glass up and you get dried fruit and orange first, with a dusting of cocoa over a little mint, then a faint whisper of vanilla and tobacco spice underneath. The sip is where it earns the badge. It's full and almost chewy, rolling through caramel, toffee, dark chocolate, a squeeze of citrus and a cinnamon tingle. The finish is creamy at first then settles into a long, warm glow that hangs around. The whole thing is balanced rather than boozy, which is the trick. Famously there are over 200 detectable flavour notes in here, so every sip shows you something slightly new.
The details
Pairs well with
Where it comes from
This is made at the Woodford Reserve Distillery in Versailles, Kentucky, sat on Glenn's Creek, which is the oldest distilling site in the state and a National Historic Landmark. The cool party trick here is the copper pot stills, imported from Scotland. Woodford is the only Kentucky distillery that triple-distills its bourbon in pot stills, which is a Scotch whisky move you almost never see on this side of the Atlantic, and it's a big reason this drinks so smooth. It's also been the official bourbon of the Kentucky Derby since 1999. Brown-Forman launched the brand in 1996, but the distilling roots on that land run back to the early 1800s.
