Zonnebloem Laureat 2016 75cl
Pour this and the room slows down a notch. Zonnebloem Lauréat is a deep, plush South African red that tastes like blackcurrant jam wrapped in warm cedar and a little spice. It's the flagship of one of the Cape's oldest wine houses, so it drinks well above its weight. Got a slab of nyama choma, a slow Friday, or people you actually like coming over? This is the bottle to open. We'll have it at your door fast, whatever the hour.
Dark and generous. You'll smell ripe plum, blackcurrant and dark berries first, then a waft of cedar, sweet spice and a little black pepper from the oak. On the palate it's full-bodied and properly smooth, all that black fruit folding into hints of dark chocolate and cedar wood. The tannins (that gentle grip on your gums) are firm but ripe, never harsh, and it finishes long. Dry, not sweet, just rich enough to feel like a treat.
The details
Pairs well with
Where it's from
Zonnebloem is one of South Africa's grand old wine names, dating back to the 1890s, and Lauréat (French for 'prize-winner') is its flagship red. The fruit comes from prime Stellenbosch pockets like Jonkershoek, Devon Valley, Stellenbosch Kloof and Helderberg, where cool maritime breezes off the Atlantic keep the grapes balanced. Each grape variety is fermented separately, then matured around 14 months in oak before the best barrels are blended together. Classic Bordeaux thinking, done with Cape sunshine.
