Exceptional★★★★★
Pour this over a fistful of ice and you've basically made dessert. Amarula is silky, sweet and gently boozy, all caramel and ripe fruit with a creamy finish that lingers. It's the after-dinner drink, the late-night treat by the fire, the thing you reach for when wine feels like too much effort. Think of it as Africa's answer to Baileys, only made from a wild fruit elephants go a little mad for.
Tasting note · by The Oaks Cellar

First sniff is pure pudding: caramel, vanilla and warm toffee, with a soft nutty thing underneath like almond and digestive biscuit. Then you taste it and the marula fruit shows up, this tropical sweetness somewhere between guava, ripe fig and crème caramel. It's properly creamy and round, no harsh alcohol bite at 17%, finishing long with a whisper of spice, almost gingerbread. Sweet, smooth, very easy to love.

Where it comes from

Amarula is South African through and through, born in 1989 and built entirely around the marula, a wild fruit that only grows in the warm, frost-free belt of sub-equatorial Africa. The fruit is hand-harvested, fermented like wine, then distilled and aged two years in French oak before it's blended with fresh cream. The marula tree gets called the elephant tree for a good reason: elephants travel for miles to feast on the fallen fruit, and the brand has long tied itself to protecting them.
