Picture a chocolate-raspberry dessert you can drink. This is Amarula's famous marula cream liqueur, but turned up: tart raspberry cutting through dark chocolate, all wrapped in that silky cream you already know. Pour it over ice after dinner and you basically don't need pudding. And because it lands in a proper gift box, it's the easy win when you need to show up somewhere with something nice. We'll get it to you fast, whatever the hour.
First whiff is sweet raspberry and cocoa over that creamy marula warmth, with a little bright citrus lift hiding underneath. On the tongue it's full and velvety, more dessert than drink: tangy berry, dark chocolate, the soft fruity marula in the middle, then a fresh squeeze from the baobab to stop it getting heavy. It finishes smooth and just-tart, cocoa and berry hanging around. Sweet, yes, but the raspberry keeps it from being one-note.
The details
Pairs well with
Where it's from
It all starts with the marula, a wild African fruit that grows around Phalaborwa in South Africa's Limpopo, where elephants are famously mad for it. The fruit is hand-harvested, fermented like wine grapes, double-distilled and matured in oak before being blended with fresh cream. That's the original Amarula. This version, launched in 2019, takes that base and folds in raspberry, chocolate and a hint of citrusy baobab, another proper African superfruit. South African through and through.
