This comes from Asconi, a family winery in the village of Puhoi in Moldova's Codru hills, just south of the capital Chișinău. Moldova is one of the oldest wine countries on the planet and quietly one of the best value, and Asconi is a fun example: started from scratch in 1994, now farming hundreds of hectares of its own vines and bottling millions a year. They were among the first in the country to harvest grapes by machine at night, when it's cool, and they age their reds in American and Hungarian oak. Serious winemaking, served up without the fuss.
