Bacardi Carta Negra 750ml
★★★★½ 4.5 (2 reviews)Pour this and you get rum with the lights turned down. Bacardí Carta Negra is the dark, brooding cousin in the family: caramel and vanilla up front, then a smoky molasses finish that lingers like the end of a good night. Tall glass, plenty of ice, ginger beer and a squeeze of lime and you've built a Tormenta Negra, the cocktail it was basically born for. Late nyama choma session or a Friday that's earned a proper drink, this one shows up ready.
The nose is toasty and nutty, all roasted almonds, oak and dark molasses. First sip leans sweet and tropical: buttery caramel, vanilla, a little dark fruit and roasted banana. Then it turns moody on the way out, smoky liquorice, espresso and that black-strap molasses depth from time spent in heavily charred barrels. Medium-bodied, so it carries a mixer without disappearing and still holds its own over a single rock.
The details
Pairs well with
Where it's from
This is Bacardí, the most famous name in rum, and it's made in Puerto Rico where the company has long done its blending and ageing. Carta Negra is built from molasses-based rums aged up to four years in heavily charred oak barrels, then charcoal-filtered to smooth out the rough edges. The dark colour and that smoky finish come from the char in those barrels, not from anything added. Blended by the Maestros de Ron BACARDÍ, the keepers of a recipe that traces back to founder Don Facundo Bacardí Massó in the 1860s.
