Pour this and the room shifts. The Dalmore 12 is all chocolate-orange and warm spice, soft as velvet, with a sherried sweetness that takes the edge off without dumbing anything down. No smoke, no harsh burn. Just a smooth, grown-up sipper that makes a slow Nairobi evening feel like a celebration. The kind of bottle you bring out when you actually want to impress someone.
First whiff is pure dessert: caramelised orange peel, dark plums, a hit of chocolate and a sweet marzipan note. Then it lands soft on the tongue, citrus and coffee with a curl of cinnamon, riding on that mellow sherry sweetness from the Oloroso casks. The finish is long and gentle, more orange, a touch of vanilla, ripe plum and a warm spice that hangs around long after the sip. Rich, rounded, zero rough edges.
The details
Pairs well with
Where it's from
The Dalmore is made in Alness, a small Highland town just north of Inverness, where the water comes off the River Alness. That 12-pointed stag on the bottle isn't decoration. The Mackenzie family earned the right to it after an ancestor saved a Scottish king from a charging stag back in the 1200s, and they slapped it on every bottle as a badge of quality. The distillery's been at it since 1839, and the chocolate-orange house style is its signature.

- What does The Dalmore 12 Year Old 700ml taste like?
Rich and smooth with caramelised orange, dark plum, chocolate and marzipan on the nose, then citrus, coffee and cinnamon with a sherried sweetness. The finish is long and gentle. No smoke at all.
- What is the ABV of The Dalmore 12 Year Old?
It's 40% ABV, in a 700ml bottle. This is the classic 12 at 40%, not the newer 43% Sherry Cask Select.

- What pairs with The Dalmore 12?
Dark chocolate, aged cheese, salted nuts and orange desserts all sing with it. It also stands up beautifully to smoky nyama choma or a cigar.
- Where is it made?
At The Dalmore distillery in Alness, in the Scottish Highlands, where it's been distilled since 1839.
- Why is it so smooth for a whisky?
It spends nine years in ex-bourbon American white oak, then half the spirit finishes three more years in ex-Oloroso sherry casks. That sherry finish adds the sweetness and roundness that makes it so easy to love, even if whisky usually isn't your thing.
