Balvenie 12 Years 700ml
Pour this and you get honey, warm vanilla and a soft hit of dried fruit before the glass even reaches your lips. It's smooth, a little nutty, with a gentle cinnamon warmth that lingers long after the last sip. This is the bottle you reach for when you want something that feels grown-up and generous but never harsh. Late night, good company, nothing to prove. The Balvenie DoubleWood 12 just gets it right.
The nose is all sweetness up front: honey, vanilla and ripe orchard fruit, with a rich raisiny note from the sherry cask underneath. On the palate it's smooth and rounded, nutty sweetness rolling into a warm cinnamon and gentle oak spice, with that sherry depth tying it together. The finish is long, warm and mellow. No smoke, no bite, just a slow comfortable glow. Easygoing enough for a newcomer, layered enough to keep a whisky nerd happy.
The details
Pairs well with
Where it's from
The Balvenie sits in Dufftown, in Speyside, the lush whisky heartland of northeast Scotland. What makes the DoubleWood special is the trick behind the name. Back in the late 1970s, Balvenie's legendary Malt Master David Stewart started experimenting with moving whisky from one type of cask into a second to finish it, an idea now known across the whisky world as 'cask finishing'. The DoubleWood 12 was the bottle that brought it to everyone, launched in 1993 for the distillery's 100th birthday. Twelve years in American oak, then a few months in European oak sherry casks. Two woods, one very good dram.
Good to know

- What does The Balvenie DoubleWood 12 Year Old 700ml taste like?
Smooth and sweet: honey, vanilla and dried fruit on the nose, then nutty sweetness with warm cinnamon spice and a layer of sherry on the palate. The finish is long, warm and mellow, with no smoke.
- What is the ABV of The Balvenie DoubleWood 12?
It's bottled at 40% ABV, a classic single malt strength that keeps it smooth and approachable.
- How should I serve it?
Neat in a tulip glass is best, with a few drops of water to open it up. One large ice cube works too, though it tames the sweetness. It's too good to mix into cocktails.
- What food pairs with The Balvenie DoubleWood 12?
Dark chocolate, sticky date pudding, aged cheddar with walnuts, and roast nyama choma all work brilliantly. The sherry sweetness and cinnamon spice love rich, slightly sweet or charred food.
- Where is The Balvenie DoubleWood 12 from?
It's a Speyside single malt Scotch whisky, made at The Balvenie distillery in Dufftown, Scotland.
- Why is it called DoubleWood?
Because it's matured in two different cask types: 12 years in American oak, then finished in European oak sherry casks. That second cask is what gives it the extra fruity, sherried depth.
