Excelsior Evan Cab Sauv 75cl
★★★★★ 5.0 (1 review)This is the one you open when dinner's serious and so are you. Excelsior's flagship Cab is deep, full and generous, all dark berries and chocolate with tannins gone soft and silky after a long sleep in oak. Pour it next to a plate of nyama choma and it just makes sense. A grown-up red for a slow night, and we'll have it at your door before the coals are ready.
Swirl it and you get blackcurrant and dark plum, a hint of cedar, a whisper of chocolate underneath. The first sip is full and rounded, ripe black fruit up front, then a soft grip of tannin that holds everything together without drying you out. It finishes long and warm, the kind of last note that makes you reach for the next sip. Dry, but never harsh.
The details
Pairs well with
Where it's from
Excelsior is a De Wet family estate in Robertson, in South Africa's Breede River Valley, and they've been making wine here across five generations. Evanthius is the flagship, named after a Hackney horse the family imported back in 1913, so the bottle carries a bit of farm legend. The grapes come off some of the oldest vines on the property, grown in lime-rich soil, hand-picked, then aged a good long while in small oak with the best barrels saved for this label.
