There's a lot going on in one little ball. First the crisp wafer shell shatters, then it gives way to a smooth chocolate-hazelnut cream, and right in the centre sits a whole roasted hazelnut for a proper toasty crunch. On the outside it's milk chocolate rolled in chopped hazelnuts, so you get that nubbly crackle before you even reach the soft bit. Pure Italian. Ferrero Rocher comes out of Alba, a little town in the hazelnut-rich hills of Piedmont, where the Ferrero family built their chocolate empire. Michele Ferrero dreamed it up in the early 80s and named it "Rocher" after a rocky grotto at the shrine of Lourdes, which is also why each one looks a bit like a craggy little gold boulder. The factory guards its recipe so closely that phones aren't allowed on the production floor.
