Ferrero Rocher was born in 1982 in Alba, a little town in the Piedmont hills of northern Italy, where hazelnuts grow everywhere. That local nut is the whole point: the Ferrero family had been building chocolate-hazelnut treats since the 1940s, stretching scarce post-war cocoa with the nuts they had on their doorstep. The name comes from Rocher de Massabielle, a grotto at the shrine of Lourdes, which is why a 'rocher' (French for rock) suits its craggy, nut-studded shell. The actual recipe is still a closely guarded secret.
