Frangelico is made in Canale, a small town in Piedmont in northern Italy, the same region famous for its hazelnuts. It leans on Tonda Gentile hazelnuts, a local cultivar so prized it earned protected status like a fine wine. The nuts are toasted and distilled, then blended with cocoa, vanilla, coffee and other botanicals and left to marry for six to eight weeks. The name nods to a legend of Fra Angelico, a hermit monk said to have crafted liqueurs in these hills, which is why the bottle wears a friar's robe. Fun bit: that little rope belt was knotted by hand right up until 2003.
