This comes from William Grant & Sons, the Scottish family firm that's been blending since 1887 and still runs independent today. The clever bit here is the wood: most whiskies pull their character from a single type of cask, but Grant's marries three. American oak for vanilla, refill bourbon barrels for a brown-sugar sweetness, and a sherry cask layered in for that dried-fruit richness. Master blender Brian Kinsman added the sherry wood specifically to balance the sweetness on this 12-year. Three barrels, one very easy-going Scotch.
