Alvarinho White 750ml
Pour this cold and the first thing you get is a zing of citrus and a little salty snap, like sea air in a glass. It's bone dry, properly fresh, with enough texture that it doesn't feel thin or boring. This is the white you grab when it's warm out, the music's on, and you want something that actually wakes your mouth up. Lighter on its feet than most Chardonnay, way more interesting than your usual Sauvignon. Trust us on this one.
Smells like grapefruit zest and white flowers, with a flinty, almost-mineral edge underneath. On the palate it's all bright citrus and a soft bite of white peach skin, then that salty minerality carries through to a long, clean, dry finish. The acidity is the star here. It keeps everything crisp and makes your mouth water for the next sip. No sweetness, no oak bomb, just a textured, lively white that means business.
The details
Pairs well with
Where it's from
This comes from Monção e Melgaço, a tiny pocket in the far north of Portugal's Vinho Verde country, right up against the Spanish border. It's the spiritual home of the Alvarinho grape, where granite soils and a cool, green climate give the wine that electric acidity and saline kick. The man behind it, João Portugal Ramos, is one of Portugal's most respected winemakers, with wineries spread across the country. The grapes here are hand-picked, fermented cool and slow over a couple of weeks, then rested in stainless steel to keep it bright and pure. First made in 2012, it's become a benchmark for what northern Portuguese white can do.
