Johnnie Walker Blue Label - Year of The Rat 1L
This is Blue Label dressed up for Lunar New Year, and it drinks exactly as good as it looks. Pour it and you get deep amber, then a wave of dried fruit, honey and dark chocolate, with a thin curl of smoke trailing behind. It's velvet. The finish just keeps going, warm and smooth, long after the sip. Crack it for the toast that actually matters, or keep the numbered bottle sealed on the shelf and let everyone ask about it.
Nose first: honey and vanilla, ripe peach and pear, a soft smokiness sitting underneath. Then the sip lands velvety, hazelnut and toffee, a twist of orange zest, a little sherried richness weaving through. The finish is where it shows off, dark chocolate and gentle smoke fading into a long, warm glow of spice and honey. Nothing harsh, nothing rushed. Every layer takes its time, which is the whole point of Blue Label.
The details
Pairs well with
Where it's from
Johnnie Walker Blue Label is Scotland's flagship blend, built from some of the rarest casks the blenders have, only about one in every 10,000 makes the cut. This Year of the Rat edition dropped in January 2020 to mark the Chinese Lunar New Year. The bottle and box carry original artwork by artist Shirley Gong, teal and gold rat motifs meant to nod to prosperity and abundance. Every bottle is individually numbered, which is why collectors chase the full zodiac series. The whisky inside draws on malts and grains from across Scotland, names like Caol Ila, Cardhu, Clynelish and the closed Port Dundas grain distillery.
