You know that Chardonnay that's all butter and nothing else? This is the opposite. It's pale gold in the glass, fresh citrus and stone fruit up front, then a soft creamy texture that sneaks up at the end. Dry, balanced, a little bit serious without being a snob about it. Pour it cold on a slow Nairobi evening and it just works.
First sniff is clean and bright: lemon and lime, then a softer waft of peach and white nectarine. There's a flinty, stony edge underneath (that's the minerality talking, the part that keeps it crisp instead of flabby). On the palate it's juicy citrus and stone fruit, then a gentle creaminess from its time in oak rolls in. The acidity keeps everything tight and fresh, and the finish is long, elegant and dry. No sugar, no heavy butterbomb vibe. Just balance.
The details
Pairs well with
Where it's from
Journey's End sits up on the Schaapenberg hills in Stellenbosch, South Africa, close enough to the ocean that cool sea breezes drift over the vines and slow the ripening (which is exactly why the wine stays so fresh). The soils are ancient decomposed granite and sandy quartz, the kind of dirt that gives you minerality for free. The Gabb family, originally from Shropshire in the UK, bought the place in 1995 and run it on a minimum-intervention, low-fuss philosophy. The grapes here are hand-picked, partly wild-fermented in 300-litre French oak barrels and left seven months on the lees, which is where that creamy texture comes from.
