Pour this cold and the whole thing just lifts. You get lime and white peach up front, a little tropical sweetness in the middle, then it finishes clean and dry so you go straight back for another sip. It's a no-fuss white that still has something to say. Grilled fish on a Friday, a slow Sunday, or just because you fancy a glass. Say the word and it's at your door.
Stick your nose in and it's all lime, pear and white peach, with a soft floral thing behind it. The sip is juicy, think ripe pear and a hint of melon and papaya, then bright acidity scrubs it all clean for a dry, mouthwatering finish. Dry meaning zero sugar sweetness, just ripe fruit. There's a faint creamy, savoury edge from time on the lees that keeps it interesting past the first glass.
The details
Pairs well with
Where it's from
Kumusha is the project of Tinashe Nyamudoka, a Zimbabwe-born sommelier who landed in South Africa in 2008 knowing nothing about wine, then worked his way from waiter to head sommelier at The Test Kitchen, one of the most lauded restaurants on the continent. He started his own label in 2017. 'Kumusha' is Shona for home or your roots, which is the whole point. The Chenin grapes come from the Breedekloof Valley in the Western Cape, fermented naturally with a light touch so the place does the talking. Bonus trivia: Tinashe captained Zimbabwe's team in the World Blind Wine Tasting Championship, the story behind the film Blind Ambition.
