You want something that wakes your mouth up without being sharp about it. This is it. Pale gold, smells of white flowers and citrus zest, then hits with lemon, lime and a salty little tingle that keeps you coming back for the next sip. It's the white you pour the second people walk in, glasses still cold, before anyone's even decided on dinner. Light enough to sip on its own, sharp enough to cut through grilled fish or a plate of bitings on a hot Nairobi evening.
Tasting note · by The Oaks Cellar

Stick your nose in and you get white flowers and a twist of citrus peel, almost like cut limes. The first sip is fresh and juicy, all lemon and lime, with acacia-flower softness underneath and a faint salty, stony minerality that makes your mouth water. It's dry, so no sugar to round it off, just clean fruit. The finish has a gentle bitter-spicy snap on the way out, the kind that begs for another sip. Medium-light body, easy on its feet, never heavy.

Where it's from

This comes from Cave de Tain, sat right under the famous Hermitage hill in Tain-l'Hermitage, in France's Northern Rhône. The cooperative was founded back in 1933 by a local vigneron, Louis Gambert de Loche, who helped shape France's whole appellation system. Marsanne is the Northern Rhône's signature white grape, grown on steep granite-and-stone terraces, and Cave de Tain knows it as well as anyone. The 'Première Note' is their easygoing, everyday take on it, carrying the IGP Collines Rhodaniennes tag rather than the grander Hermitage name, which is exactly why it's so drinkable and so fair on the wallet.
