Nau Mai Sauvignon Blanc 750ml. 2021
Pour this cold and the whole glass lights up: lime, passionfruit and that green snap of gooseberry. It's bright, bone-dry and zippy, the kind of white that wakes up your tongue and makes you want the next sip immediately. Friday's done, the nyama choma is on, you want something crisp and alive in your hand. This is it. We'll have it at your door, properly chilled, whatever the hour.
Stick your nose in and it's a tropical hit: passionfruit and citrus with a fresh green, herby edge, like just-cut grass and lime zest. The first sip is all juicy lime and tart gooseberry, a flash of passionfruit, then a clean mineral streak running underneath that keeps it serious rather than just sweet-fruity. It finishes dry and tight, mouth-watering, asking for another go. Colour's a pale straw, almost water-clear in the light.
The details
Pairs well with
Where it's from
This comes out of Marlborough, the corner of New Zealand's South Island that basically made Sauvignon Blanc world-famous. "Nau Mai" means "welcome" in te reo Maori, which is a nice touch for a wine this open and easy to like. The estate runs about 15 hectares of vines in sandy, loamy soil right by the ocean, and the trick is the weather: warm days, cold nights, big swings that lock in all that punchy fruit and crackling acidity. Grapes get picked, cooled, and fermented slow and cold in steel tanks to keep everything fresh and loud.
