Excelsior Purebred Sweet Red
β β β β β 4.8 (6 reviews)You know that friend who's easy company no matter the mood? This is the wine version. Sweet, soft and loaded with juicy berry, it goes down like a treat rather than a test. No homework, no swirling-and-frowning. Pour it slightly chilled on a slow Nairobi evening and watch it disappear. At 9% it's gentle too, so you can keep the night going.
First sniff and you get a wave of ripe red berries, blackcurrant and that jammy cassis smell, with a little warm toasty oak sitting underneath. On the palate it's velvety and rounded, plump with sweet strawberry and dark-berry fruit. The tannins (that grippy, drying feel a red can have) are barely there, soft as anything, so nothing tugs at your cheeks. It finishes sweet and fruity, the kind of sip that makes you reach straight for the next one.
The details
Pairs well with
Where it's from
This comes from Excelsior, a fifth-generation de Wet family farm in the Robertson Valley out in South Africa's Western Cape, going since 1859. Here's the fun bit: long before the wine fame, Excelsior was a serious racehorse stud, and that heritage is exactly where the 'Purebred' name and the horse on the label come from. The grapes grow in chalky clay soil that the region is famous for, and the estate now ships wine to more than 20 countries.
