Some nights you don't want a whisky that fights you. You want one that just gets along with you. That's this. Tamnavulin Double Cask is soft, honeyed and easy-going, the bottle you pour when mates drop by and you can't be bothered explaining peat or proof. Sip it neat after a long day, or build a slow drink while the nyama choma's still on the grill. It punches well above what you pay for it, which is the best kind of secret to have on your shelf.
First whiff is all comfort: vanilla, ripe orchard fruit, a drizzle of honey and a little marzipan sweetness. On the tongue it's smooth and rounded, leaning into pear and creamy peach with a touch of red fruit, a nutty almond note and a gentle warm spice that's the sherry cask saying hello. The finish is soft and sweet, brown sugar and vanilla fading slow, with just a dry nutty edge to keep it grown-up. No smoke, no harsh burn. Just an easy, fruity glide.
The details
Pairs well with
Where it's from
Tamnavulin sits deep in Speyside, the lush corner of Scotland that turns out more single malts than anywhere else. The name is Gaelic for 'mill on the hill', a nod to the old mill the distillery was built beside back in 1966, down near the River Livet at the foot of the Cairngorm mountains. For decades its whisky mostly went quietly into blends. The Double Cask, launched to mark the distillery's 50th birthday, was its proper introduction as a single malt in its own right: aged in American oak, then finished in sherry casks for that sweet, toffee glow.
