This one's got a proper origin story. Back in 1882 a Leith blender called William Sanderson lined up 100 experimental casks and had a panel of friends taste them blind. Cask number 69 won the vote, the name stuck, and a classic was born. It's a blend of around 40 different malt and grain whiskies, traditionally leaning on Royal Lochnagar malt and North British grain. And yes, when Ernest Shackleton sailed for Antarctica in 1914, VAT 69 went with him, officially for medicinal and celebratory purposes. Make of that what you will.
