On the palate it's smooth and full-bodied: more of that sugarcane-syrup depth, a little toffee, then a touch of toasted oak and a whisper of smoke from those charred barrels. The finish is long and satisfying, more dry than sweet, so it never turns cloying. Comforting stuff, with proper Caribbean richness.

Where it's from

The Captain is Henry Morgan, a real 17th-century Welsh privateer who raided his way across the Caribbean and ended up Lieutenant Governor of Jamaica. The rum that carries his name is a blend of Caribbean rums from Jamaica, Guyana and Barbados, made using both pot stills and column stills and aged a few years in charred oak barrels. That oak ageing is where the colour and the smooth, spiced depth come from. Now part of the Diageo family, but the swagger is all pirate.
