Pour this when you want a whisky that whispers instead of shouts. Cragganmore 12 is all heather, honey and orchard fruit up front, then a soft, smoky warmth slides in underneath. It's complex without being a workout, the kind of dram you sip slowly on the balcony after a long week and keep finding new things in. Connoisseurs call it the most refined of the Speysides. They're not wrong.
Pale gold in the glass. The nose is the showstopper: wildflowers and heather, a drizzle of honey, fresh orchard fruit and a soft vanilla creaminess. Sip it and it's rounded and gentle, sweet fruit and malt rolling into a quiet, smoky finish with a curl of orange peel. Nothing aggressive, nothing harsh. Add a few drops of water and it opens up into spicy oak and a little pepper. Smart, layered, easygoing.
The details
Pairs well with
Where it's from
Cragganmore sits at Ballindalloch in Speyside, built in 1869 by John Smith, a guy who'd already worked at Macallan and Glenlivet before going solo. He picked the spot for the railway, making it the first Speyside distillery designed around the train line. The magic is in the gear: oddly flat-topped spirit stills and old-school worm tub condensers, both rare today, both responsible for that complex, slightly meaty character. In 1988 Diageo named it one of the six original Classic Malts, the bottle chosen to represent all of Speyside. Quietly legendary.

- What does Cragganmore 12 Year Old 750ml taste like?
Floral and honeyed on the nose (heather, wildflowers, orchard fruit, vanilla), then rounded and gently sweet on the palate with a soft, smoky finish and a hint of orange peel. Refined and complex rather than bold.

40% ABV. A classic, approachable strength for a Speyside single malt.

Neat in a tulip or Glencairn glass, with a few drops of water to open up the aromas. Go light on ice, it's too elegant to numb.

Smoked salmon, roast chicken, aged cheddar and dark chocolate all work. Locally, it's lovely alongside grilled nyama choma.

Only lightly. There's a gentle wisp of smoke woven through the sweetness, but it's nothing like the heavy peat of an Islay malt. Think subtle warmth, not a bonfire.
