Back in 1874 a bartender named Martin Wilkes Heron reckoned whiskey was too rough to drink straight, so he smoothed it out with fruit and spice and called it Southern Comfort. The recipe is still a guarded secret, and since the Sazerac Company took over in 2016, whiskey is firmly back as the base. A 150-year-old American classic, still doing its thing.
