Aberlour 16 Year Old 700ml
★★★★★ 5.0 (1 review)This is the one you pour when the day is done and you actually want to slow down. Sixteen years in the cask have made Aberlour rich and rounded, all dark honey, sherried fruit and a warm hit of chocolate and spice. It drinks like a hug in a glass. Pour a measure, sink into the couch, and let it open up. We'll have it at your door fast, any hour.
First nose is gorgeous: dark honey and something that smells exactly like homemade apple pie, warm and a bit jammy. The sip is where it earns the years. Rich sherry sweetness up front, then dark chocolate, baking spice, oak and a tumble of dried fruit like raisins and plum. Nothing sharp or hot, just smooth and full. The finish is long and warm, leaving you with gentle spice and a sweet, oaky glow that hangs around. Sip it slow. There's a lot going on.
The details
Pairs well with
Where it's from
Aberlour sits in Speyside, the lush whisky heartland of northern Scotland, right where the Lour Burn meets the River Spey under Ben Rinnes. James Fleming built the distillery in 1879 on the site of St Drostan's Well, locking in a source of pure spring water that still feeds the spirit today. The name itself comes from Gaelic for 'mouth of the chattering burn'. The double cask style is their signature: spirit matured in both traditional oak and Spanish Oloroso sherry casks, which is exactly where all that dried fruit and chocolate richness comes from.
