On the nose it's classic Glenfiddich fruit. Apple blossom, ripe pear, a little vanilla and golden sugar. Then the sip gets interesting. Sweet candyfloss up front, then toasted almonds, cinnamon spice and a dark, jammy hit of port-cask richness. There's a whisper of liquorice in there too. It finishes deep, mellow and long, with a sweet oakiness that lingers. Rich and layered without ever turning harsh, even at 47%.

This is the Glenfiddich Distillery in Dufftown, Speyside, doing an experiment. Malt Master Brian Kinsman flew in 20 whisky experts from 16 countries and turned them loose in the warehouse. Each one picked a single cask they loved, from first-fill bourbon barrels to old port pipes and sherry butts. Brian then married all 20 into one whisky. That's the XX, which is Roman numerals for twenty, and the thumbprint on the bottle is all 20 of their prints layered together. The casks ran roughly 8 to 20 years old. It's the second release in Glenfiddich's Experimental Series.
