Pour this when you want a whisky that just gets along with everyone. It's soft, fruity and silky, zero smoke, zero burn to fight through. First sip in and you get sweet orchard fruit and vanilla, the kind of dram that's friendly enough for a whisky newcomer but classy enough that the regulars nod along. Perfect for a slow Friday, a balcony catch-up, or after the nyama choma's been cleared and you just want to sit.
Bright gold in the glass. The nose is all sunshine: tropical fruit with a clear hit of pineapple, a bit of orchard apple and pear, and warm vanilla underneath. Sip it and it's smooth and creamy, sweet peach and ripe fruit up front, a little marzipan and gentle spice, then that vanilla rolls back in. The finish is long, mellow and balanced, with soft oak and a whisper of milk chocolate. No rough edges anywhere.
The details
Pairs well with
Where it's from
This is Speyside royalty. The Glenlivet sits in a quiet glen in the Scottish Highlands, and back in 1824 George Smith made it the first distillery in the area to go fully legal under the new Excise Act, a gutsy move when his neighbours were still running illicit stills. That heritage basically wrote the Speyside playbook: elegant, fruity, easygoing whisky. The Double Oak bit is the clever part. It's matured in European oak and then American oak, two woods layering different fruit and vanilla notes into one balanced glass.
