Glenlivet Founder's Reserve 1L
Want a whisky that won't fight you back? This is the one. Founder's Reserve is all soft oranges, ripe pear and a creamy, chocolate-raisin sweetness that goes down like a treat. It's the Speyside single malt you pour for someone who says they don't like Scotch, then watch them ask for another. Pour it neat after a long day, or build it into a highball when the night gets going. And the 1L bottle means you're not running dry at midnight.
Stick your nose in and it's bright and zesty: sweet orange and a bit of ripe pear, with a creamy vanilla note humming underneath. The first sip is gentle and fruity, more sweet citrus, then it rolls into chocolate raisin and little flakes of milk chocolate. That creaminess is the giveaway of the first-fill American oak it sleeps in. The finish is smooth and soft, no harsh burn, just warm and easy. Properly approachable.
The details
Pairs well with
Where it's from
It comes from The Glenlivet, up in Speyside in the Scottish Highlands, the valley that practically wrote the rulebook on smooth, fruity single malt. The name's a nod to George Smith, the founder who in 1824 became the first man to take out a legal licence to distil here, back when the glen was thick with moonshiners. Founder's Reserve is his house tribute: matured in traditional oak with a good slug of first-fill American oak casks, which is exactly where that creamy sweetness comes from.
