J&B Rare 1L
★★★★★ 5.0 (1 review)You know the one. That sunny yellow label parked behind every bar from here to Westlands. Pour J&B over ice and it goes down soft and fruity, all apple and pear with a little vanilla, none of that heavy bonfire smoke that scares people off Scotch. It plays so nicely with soda or ginger ale that you barely notice the night getting longer. And the 1L? That's the size you grab when the crew is coming over and one bottle has to do real work.
First thing you'll clock is how pale it is in the glass. That's on purpose, not weak. The nose is fresh and a touch grassy, soft orchard fruit, apple and pear, with a whisper of vanilla underneath. Sip it and it's smooth and gentle, light-bodied, more vanilla and a faint warm spice creeping in on the finish. There's the tiniest curl of smoke right at the end, the kind you'd miss if you weren't looking. Nothing harsh, nothing that bites. This is Scotch with the rough edges sanded right off.
The details
Pairs well with
Where it comes from
J&B stands for Justerini & Brooks, a London wine and spirits shop with roots going all the way back to 1749. The Rare blend itself was dreamed up in the early 1930s to land in America the moment Prohibition ended, deliberately made lighter and fresher to win over drinkers who found most Scotch too rough. It's a blend of around 42 different malt and grain whiskies, with the 'heart malts' coming from Speyside distilleries like Knockando, Auchroisk, Strathmill and Glen Spey. Fun aside: it became the Rat Pack's bottle of choice in the Sinatra era, which did its cool reputation no harm at all.
