J&B comes from Justerini & Brooks, a London wine-and-spirits house with roots all the way back to 1749. The whisky itself is the newer chapter: in the early 1930s a blender named Charlie Julian built J&B Rare from around 42 different malt and grain whiskies, leaning hard on light, fruity Speyside malts from distilleries like Knockando, Auchroisk, Strathmill and Glen Spey. It was designed to be pale and easy on purpose, aimed at drinkers who wanted something fresh rather than heavy. It worked. Today it's one of the best-selling Scotches on the planet.
