You know that glowing orange drink in everyone's hand the second the sun starts dropping? This is the bottle behind it. Aperol is bittersweet and breezy, all zesty orange with a little grown-up bitterness on the back end, and at just 11% it keeps you bright instead of floored. Pour it over ice, top with bubbles, and you've basically summoned a Nairobi rooftop golden hour into a glass. Grab the 1L, because one round is never one round.
Tasting note · by The Oaks Cellar

First hit is orange, but not sweet-soda orange. Think fresh bitter-orange peel, the fragrant kind, with a herbal lift underneath. Then it turns bittersweet as it goes down, a gentle bitterness from gentian and a whisper of rhubarb root that stops it from ever feeling cloying. It's light and almost juicy, way softer and friendlier than its red cousin Campari. Finishes clean and a touch zesty, leaving you reaching straight for the next sip.

Where it comes from

Aperol is pure Italy, born in Padua in the Veneto. The Barbieri brothers, Luigi and Silvio, mixed up the recipe and showed it off at the 1919 Padua International Fair. Silvio reportedly named it after 'apero', French slang for an aperitif he'd picked up on a trip. The blend is famously secret, an infusion of orange, gentian, rhubarb and a bunch of herbs and roots, and the recipe has barely changed in over a century. Most of those herbs still come from northern Italy. That orange glow has been kicking off Italian aperitivo hour ever since.

Quick questions

What is the price of Aperol Aperitivo 1L?

Aperol Aperitivo 1L is KSh 3,379 at Oaks & Corks. Order online for delivery in 30 minutes for most areas in Nairobi, or next day countrywide.

What does Aperol Aperitivo 1L taste like?

Bittersweet orange. You get bright bitter-orange peel and a herbal lift up front, then a gentle bitterness from gentian and rhubarb that keeps it from being sugary. Light, zesty and very easy to keep sipping.

What is the ABV of Aperol?

It's 11%, which is on the low side for a spirit. That's a big part of why a Spritz is so easy-going through a long evening.

How do I serve Aperol?

As a Spritz. Big glass full of ice, 3 parts Prosecco, 2 parts Aperol, 1 part soda, and an orange slice. Pour the Prosecco first so it stays fizzy.

What's the difference between Aperol and Campari?

Aperol is lighter, sweeter and softer at 11%, with an orange-forward, gentler bitterness. Campari is darker, much more bitter and stronger. Aperol is the easier, sunnier sip of the two.

What pairs with Aperol Spritz?

Salty, snacky aperitivo stuff. Olives, almonds, prosciutto, pizza, bruschetta, a cheese board. The bitterness cuts through rich and salty food beautifully, even a plate of nyama choma.

Where is Aperol from?

Italy, specifically Padua in the Veneto region. The Barbieri brothers created it there in 1919, and the secret recipe has stayed nearly the same ever since.
