Pour this when you actually want to slow down. Bacardí Ocho is a deep amber rum aged at least eight years in oak, and it drinks like it. Dried apricot, vanilla, a little nutmeg, then a long warm finish that hangs around after the glass is empty. Neat or over one big rock, no mixer needed. The kind of bottle you bring out for a proper late one, not a quick round.
Tasting note · by The Oaks Cellar

First sniff is dried fruit. Apricot, a bit of prune, with toasted oak and vanilla underneath. The sip is rich and smooth, never sharp. Think honey and molasses, a whisper of nutmeg spice, all carried by that eight years in American oak. It finishes long and warm, gently spiced, the kind of glow that makes you take your time. Smooth enough to drink neat, layered enough that you keep finding new notes.

Where it's from

This is Bacardí's family reserve, made in Cataño, Puerto Rico. The recipe traces back to the original private blend of founder Don Facundo Bacardí, who was one of the first to deliberately age rum in oak to build flavour, the way Europeans did with brandy and whisky. For seven generations it was the stuff the family kept for themselves. Ocho means eight, and that's the promise: every drop aged a minimum of eight years in American white oak before it's blended. One of the oldest private rum blends going.

Bacardi Reserva Ocho 8 Years 1L is KSh 5,499 at Oaks & Corks. Order online for delivery in 30 minutes for most areas in Nairobi, or next day countrywide.

What does Bacardí Reserva Ocho 8 Year Old 1L taste like?

Deep amber and smooth. You get dried apricot, vanilla and toasted oak on the nose, then prune, honey, molasses and a little nutmeg spice on the palate, with a long warm finish. Rich but never harsh.

What is the ABV of Bacardí Reserva Ocho?

It's 40% ABV, and this is the 1 litre bottle.

How do I serve Bacardí Ocho?

Neat or over one big ice cube in a rocks or tulip glass. It's a sipping rum, so skip the mixer. If you want a cocktail, it makes a brilliant rum Old Fashioned.

How long is it aged?

A minimum of eight years in American white oak barrels. That's where the dried fruit, vanilla and spice come from. Ocho literally means eight.

Where is Bacardí Reserva Ocho from?

Puerto Rico. It's made at the Bacardí distillery in Cataño and is based on the family's original private reserve blend.

Is it good for cocktails or better neat?

Both, but it shines neat or on the rocks where you taste the age. For mixing, keep it to stirred, rum-forward drinks like an Old Fashioned so the oak still comes through.
