Pour this and your whole kitchen smells like a hillside after rain. The Botanist is the gin you reach for when a plain G&T feels too plain. It's wildflowers, lemon zest and a soft herbal hum all at once, the kind of bottle that makes you slow down and actually taste your drink. Late-night pour after a long week, or the centrepiece of the gin trolley when people are over. It earns its spot.
Tasting note · by The Oaks Cellar

The nose hits you first: fresh-cut herbs, sweet citrus and a meadow's worth of little flowers, juniper sitting underneath rather than shouting. On the tongue it's silky, almost a touch oily in the best way, so it coats and lingers instead of vanishing. You get lemon peel, a green minty lift, chamomile and elderflower, then a gentle earthy spice from coriander and cassia bark on the way out. The finish is dry and long. Layered and grown-up, never sharp or boozy despite the 46%.

Where it's from

This comes off Islay, the wild whisky island on Scotland's west coast, from Bruichladdich Distillery. Here's the fun part: it's distilled in a quirky old Lomond still the team nicknamed 'Ugly Betty', and they run it low and slow for about 17 hours so the delicate botanicals give up every bit of aroma without turning harsh. Twenty-two of those botanicals are hand-foraged on the island itself, layered over nine classic gin ingredients. A whisky island making one of the most respected gins on earth. Go figure.

FAQ

What is the price of The Botanist Islay Dry Gin 700ml?

The Botanist Islay Dry Gin 700ml is KSh 5,399 at Oaks & Corks. Order online for delivery in 30 minutes for most areas in Nairobi, or next day countrywide.

What does The Botanist Islay Dry Gin 700ml taste like?

Bright and floral with lemon zest, fresh herbs, mint and wildflowers up top, then juniper, chamomile and a gentle earthy spice. The texture is silky and the finish is long and dry. Complex and layered, not one-note.

What is the ABV of The Botanist gin?

It's bottled at 46%, a bit punchier than your average gin, which is part of why the flavour carries so well in a G&T or Martini.

How do I serve The Botanist?

Pour it cold over lots of ice with quality tonic and a sprig of thyme or mint. It's also a superb Martini or Negroni gin, and smooth enough to sip neat.

What food pairs with The Botanist gin?

Grilled prawns and fish, smoked salmon, salty olives and cheese, or fragrant coconut and lemongrass curries. Its herbal, citrus side loves fresh, zesty food.

Where is The Botanist gin made?

At Bruichladdich Distillery on the island of Islay in Scotland, using 22 botanicals hand-foraged on the island plus 9 classic gin botanicals.

What makes The Botanist different from other gins?

The 22 wild Islay botanicals and a slow 17-hour distillation in the 'Ugly Betty' Lomond still. That gives it a layered, floral-herbal character rather than a hard juniper hit.
