This is the bottle for the night you actually want to taste the tequila, not bury it in salt and lime. Pour Patrón Añejo neat and it's all soft oak, warm vanilla and a little honey, gliding down velvet-smooth with zero burn. It's amber because it's spent a year-plus in oak barrels, so think slow sips on the balcony, not shots at the bar. Grab it when you're winding down after a long one and you want something that drinks like a reward.
First sniff is that lovely roasted-agave sweetness with vanilla and caramel sitting right on top. Then you taste it and it's genuinely silky, oak and sweet agave up front with little hints of chocolate, dried fruit and gentle baking spice. The finish is long and warm, a touch of honey, a whisper of smoke, and not a hint of harshness. It's the kind of smooth that makes you forget it's 40%.
The details
Pairs well with
Where it's from
Patrón is made in the highlands of Jalisco, Mexico, from 100% Weber Blue Agave. The cool thing is how they crush the cooked agave: some of it goes through the ancient tahona, a giant volcanic stone wheel, and some through a modern roller mill, then the two get blended back together. After fermenting and double-distilling, it rests over 12 months in small oak barrels. That stone-wheel-meets-machine approach is exactly why the Añejo has both old-school depth and that clean, polished finish.
