Tusker-A Symbol of A Nation’s Pride.

Tusker is the beer that best embodies the Kenyan spirit. It currently has four Gold-Award Winning Varieties; Tusker Lager, Tusker Malt, Tusker Lite, and the recently introduced Cider, giving you more options to choose from. Collectively, they make it the largest East African Brand in the Diageo Group. Did you know that the brand commands over 30% of the country’s total beer market? For Kenya, Tusker is more than just a beer; it is a symbol of national pride.

Tusker Beer a symbol of a nation's prideWith pride, we note that Tusker is one of the most celebrated beers, not just in Kenya, but other regions like Tanzania, Uganda, South Sudan and the UK as well.  If you are a consumer, then chances are you love it for its unmistakably rich, smooth, and premium taste.

It is also interesting to note that the story behind its naming is quite a sentimental one. The brew, even though founded in 1922 by brothers, George and Chris Hurst, it is only until 1923 that it came to get the name “Tusker”. This after the unfortunate death of George Hurst by an elephant during a hunting expedition. As a result, Chris decided to name the brew Tusker in memory of his late brother. Elephants indigenous to East Africa are known as tuskers, hence the name Tusker and the elephant logo synonymous with the brand.

But one full year of being nameless? If beers had rights, this particular one would most probably sue.

The brew is a flagship of the Kenya Breweries Limited, which later came to be known as East African Breweries Limited. This after its merger with Tanzania’s Tanganyika Breweries and Uganda’s Uganda Breweries.

But what makes Tusker unique?

What makes it stand out from the rest is the fact that its brewing ingredients are 100% Kenyan. Tusker is home-made. The Barley comes from the Savannah and the Maasai Mara. The spring water is from the Aberdare Mountains. The yeast is also local.

As Kenyans, we have it in our culture to enjoy our beers in the evening. Served cold with stories from friends and colleagues on the side. Sometimes we ask for music, but most times, the warmth of friendship is enough to make it a memorable drinking experience. With the current statistics of over 700,000 hectolitres of the brew selling in the country per year, it is not hard to guess which brand the nation enjoys most.
