There’s a local saying in Dufftown: “Rome was built on seven hills, and Dufftown stands on seven stills.” In 1897, Glendullan was the seventh distillery built in that famous Scottish town in Speyside, and is named after the Dullan Water, which runs through the township.
Founded by William Williams & Sons, blenders from Aberdeen, the new distillery made an immediate splash becoming a favourite of King Edward VII, to whom it was supplied by Royal Request from 1902. That Royal seal of approval in its early years speaks to a quality the distillery has never abandoned.
Tasting Notes
Colour: Deep amber with warm golden highlights.
Nose: Dry, rich and complex with a mild nose-feel, backed by black pepper and mature notes of cigar box. On closer inspection, expect brittle toffee and dried fruits alongside hints of fresh green apple and honey.
Palate: Smooth rich texture with sweet citrus notes balanced by chocolate, cherry and chilli. The 18 years in oak bring a deeper, darker fruit character than the younger expressions in the range, with chocolate and banana almond adding warmth and weight to the mid-palate.
Finish: Soft, dry and rounded. Adding water allows a pleasant, nutty spiciness to come through, recalling the cigar-box found on the nose, while there’s a cooling aftertaste.
Body: Medium to full.
Serving suggestion: Enjoy neat or over a single large ice cube. A small splash of still water opens up the nuttier, spicier notes beautifully.
