The story of Jameson Black Barrel is a tribute to the “Cooper”the masters of the barrels. In the early days of Irish whiskey making, barrels were charred to sanitize them and mellow the spirit. Jameson took this tradition a step further with the “Black Barrel” process. By charring the barrels twice, they break down the wood’s cellulose to release more natural sugars, which interact with the whiskey during maturation to produce its distinctive butterscotch and fudge notes.
Originally launched as “Select Reserve” in 2011, this whiskey was rebranded to highlight the specific double-charring technique that defines its character. It remains one of the few whiskeys in the world to use a rare, small-batch grain whiskey that is only produced for one week every year at the distillery.
Tasting Notes
- Aroma: Time spent maturing in double-charred barrels leads to intensified aromas of butterscotch, fudge, and creamy toffee, balanced by fruity notes of apple and nectarine.
- Palate: A rich, full mouthfeel where nutty notes are in abundance alongside the smooth sweetness of spice and vanilla.
- Finish: An intense finish with lingering notes of toasted wood, vanilla, and a hint of warming cinnamon.
Accolades and Master Blender Reviews
Jameson Black Barrel is one of the most awarded Irish whiskeys in its category. Billy Leighton, Jameson’s Master Blender, describes it as a whiskey designed to deliver a “sweeter top note,” making the final product incredibly “round” and approachable.
