VAT 69 is a Scotch blended whisky created by William Sanderson & Son Limited of South Queensferry, Scotland, now part of Diageo.
Despite its name, VAT 69 is not a vatted malt, but a blend of about 40 malt and grain whiskies. VAT 69 Reserve carries no standard age statement because of the combination of the malts and grains.
It is a famous old brand of blended whisky, chosen by Sir Ernest Shackleton to accompany him on his Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition of 1914 ‘for medicinal and celebratory purposes’, and also famously the favourite whisky of Captain Lewis Nixon of the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, immortalised in the book and TV series Band of Brothers..
Tasting Notes
Colour: Light to mid golden honey
Nose: Hints of toasted grain and light vanilla, together with citrus peel brightness that lifts the aroma. Straightforward clarity, with each element supporting the others. Floral and malty undertones run quietly beneath.
Palate: Notes of barley malt with a soft wheat character, a touch of pear juice, ground almonds and a slightly biscuity quality. Gentle pepper and spice emerge mid-palate, sweet and rounded.
Finish: Moderate in length, with a faint smoky undertone that surfaces briefly. Spice and honeyed notes linger as a clean but persistent sign-off that invites another sip.
Best Served: Neat or with a splash of still water to open the aromatics. A single large ice cube works beautifully to mellow the edges. VAT 69 is also a superb base for a classic Rob Roy or Rusty Nail cocktail.
